Georgia Month by Month
Georgia is small enough to drive across in a day and varied enough that no single month is good for all of it. Here is the whole year, told honestly, including the parts we would rather you skipped.

The country runs from sea level at Batumi to 5,054 metres at the summit of Kazbek, with a subtropical coast on one side and semi-desert on the other. What follows is what we tell people when they ask "when should we come" and then wait for a real answer.
Winter — December to February
Good for: skiing, Tbilisi, wine cellars, sulphur baths.
Closed: Svaneti's high road, Tusheti entirely, most mountain guesthouses.
Gudauri opens in December and holds snow until early April, with a lift-served vertical of 1,000 metres and off-piste terrain that draws people who could ski anywhere. Tbilisi in winter is grey but alive, and the sulphur baths in Abanotubani make more sense at 4 °C than at 34 °C. Ushguli is reachable only by 4x4, and often not at all.
March and April
Good for: late skiing, Kakheti, Tbilisi in blossom.
Not yet: any trekking above 2,000 metres.
The awkward shoulder. Gudauri still skis into April; the mountains below it are mud. Kakheti is green and empty and cheap, and the wine cellars have time for you in a way they do not in October. Expect rain.

May and early June
Good for: rafting, Kazbegi, wildflowers, the coast warming up.
Not yet: the Mestia–Ushguli trek — the Adishi river crossing is dangerous on full meltwater.
This is the most underrated window in the year. The Aragvi is at its fastest, the alpine meadows above Kazbegi turn into flower fields in the last week of May, and there is nobody anywhere. The catch is that the high passes are still closed and the weather changes hourly.
Mid-June to August
Good for: everything in the mountains, the Black Sea.
Difficult: Tbilisi and Kakheti heat, availability, prices.
Everything is open. The Mestia–Ushguli trek runs from around 15 June. Tusheti's Abano pass — the one with the reputation — usually opens in the first half of June and closes in early October. The trade-off is 35 °C in the lowlands and full guesthouses in the highlands, both of which want planning around.
The one-line version
- Trekking: mid-June to early October, best in September
- Skiing: late December to early April
- Wine and harvest: late September to mid-October
- Black Sea: July and August only, honestly
- Tbilisi: any month except the first three weeks of August
September and early October
Good for: all of it.
Warm valleys, open passes, dry trails, harvest in Kakheti, and the light turning. If you can only travel once and you can choose the month, choose this one — we have written at length about why.
Late October and November
Good for: Tbilisi, Kakheti after harvest, empty monasteries.
Closing: Tusheti (early October), Ushguli guesthouses, most high routes.
The country shuts its mountain half. What is left is a very pleasant low-country autumn: colour in the vineyards, no queues anywhere, and prices at their lowest. November is the month with the least to recommend it, which is also its argument.
There is no month when Georgia is closed. There are months when half of it is.
Fitting it together
Most first trips want two things at once — mountains and wine — and those two peak three weeks apart. If your dates are fixed, tell us which one matters more and we will build the route around it rather than around the calendar. If your dates are open, we will tell you the fortnight to book.
Start with the four journeys, or just send us your window on the contact page.
