Learning to Fly over Gudauri

Gudauri is a ski resort for four months and a paragliding site for the other eight. Here is what the flight actually involves, from the walk to take-off to the moment your feet touch grass again.

Learning to Fly over Gudauri

The thermals above Gudauri are reliable in a way that pilots talk about at length and passengers never notice. What passengers notice is that the ground goes away very gradually, and that it is completely silent.

How the morning goes

Flights run in two windows: early morning, roughly 9–11, when the air is smooth, and late afternoon, when the thermals have calmed again. Midday is when the valley cooks and the air gets rough — good for experienced pilots chasing altitude, less good for a first flight.

You meet at the take-off meadow above the resort at around 2,200 metres. The pilot straps you into a harness in front of them, clips the two of you together at four points, and explains the only thing you have to do: run, and keep running until your legs are no longer touching anything. That is genuinely the entire briefing.

Take-off takes about six steps. Then the wing loads above you, the slope drops away, and you are sitting in a chair a thousand metres above the Aragvi valley.

What you see

North, up the valley, toward Kazbegi and the pass. West, into the Devil's Valley — Gudauri's cirque, which from the ground is a wall and from the air is a bowl. Below, the Georgian Military Highway threading through it all, with trucks the size of grains of rice heading for the Russian border.

The flight lasts 15–25 minutes depending on conditions and on whether your pilot finds a thermal worth staying in. Landing is on a flat meadow near the road, and it is a gentle affair: the pilot flares, you take two steps, it is over.

The practical numbers

  • Season: May to October, with June and September the most reliable
  • Price: 250–350 GEL for a tandem flight, video usually 50 GEL extra
  • Weight limits: most operators fly 30–110 kg
  • Duration: allow two hours door to door, most of it waiting for the right air
  • Cancellation: weather calls are made on the morning, not the day before

Who should not book it

Fear of heights is, oddly, not a disqualifier — there is no edge, no ladder, nothing to look down past, and most people who dread it end up fine. Motion sickness is the real one. If you are the person who cannot read in a car, take something an hour beforehand and tell your pilot, who will fly straighter and skip the spirals.

Recent surgery, late pregnancy and back problems are worth an honest conversation before you book rather than at the take-off meadow.

Nobody has ever come back down and said it was shorter than they expected. Twenty minutes in the air is a long time.

Fitting it into a trip

Gudauri is two hours from Tbilisi and forty minutes from Kazbegi, which makes it the natural stop on the way north. We normally build the flight into the morning of a Kazbegi day, keeping the afternoon free for Gergeti — and keeping the following morning free too, in case the weather moves the flight.

In winter the same slopes are a ski resort with a lift-served vertical of 1,000 metres. Both versions are on the Gudauri journey.

Why September Is Georgia's Golden Month

Every year we watch the same thing happen: people book Georgia for July, and every year we quietly try to move them three weeks later. Here is why.
